My 95 Maxima has 1 or 2 noisy lifters. Are these mechanical or hydraulic? Can they be adjusted or do they need to be replaced? Is replacement a simple task?

You might want to ask this question on the forums at Maxima.org. Alot of people with alot of knowledge. just ask in the 4th gen forum. but do a search before you ask though.

The VQ engine uses a bucket and shim type of mechanical lifter. The shims can wear, especially if you go long periods between oil changes. The shims can be replaced, but replacement is not simple. A proficient amateur mechanic could do it, though. Clearance measurements need to be taken before getting the correct thickness shims, though, so you can't buy the shims beforehand.
