Replace Cylinder Head Temp Sensor on 1987 Maxima VG30E Engine

I need to replace the Cylinder Head Temp Sensor on an 1987 Maxima with a VG30E engine. The service manual states to do this with timing belt is remove. Can this be done by just removing the accessory belt brackets, stud and the timing belt cover without removing the timing belt? It looks like there might be enough room.

it can be done but you'll need a special socket to get it out.

be sure to replace the little sub harness also

What type of socket is it - extra deep to clear the electrical connector? Where can I get the tool? Nissan, OTC, Miller ?

Or maybe a slotted type for an O2 sensor? How about a crows foot wrench?

Before you replace the sensor, check the connector. When I replaced mine (1988), the connector was full of corrosion, preventing a good connection. The connector is close to the sensor and hard to get to. Your sensor is probably still good.

Thanks for the heads up. Sure enough there was corrosion and after a clean-up the sensor tested good. Unfortunately the harness is no longer available from Nissan for this year Max, so I cleaned it up with contact cleaner and applied dielectric grease.
