1994 306 xr Speedo and Odometer Not Working

I have recently bought a bargain peugeot 306xr 1.6 'L' reg. Proper mint car, and the only thing wrong with it is that the speedo and odometer doesn't work

I have turned the end of the cable that comes from the dashboard and the speedo moves up and down when i move it so i know that works fine, so i was just wondering if anyone knew what else it could be.

I dont want to have to take it to the peugeot dealers cos it will cost a fortune so i was wondering if i would be able to fix it

Any ideas? cheers

The same happened to my 2 year-old 306. It was something to do with some weird power surge burning the speed sensor on the wheels. I'm sorry I'm unable to translate the parts that were changed but the total was 700 euro... Good luck

I have a 95 pug 405 and had a similar problem. Around 94/95 the speedo is mechanically driven and yet there is an electonic sensor on the gearbox which is used by the ECU. The sensor is on the gearbox just near the rhs drive shaft and the speedo cable fits into the top of the sensor.

On my car the mechanical coupling through the sensor failed. I opened up the sensor and repaired it but this is a job for someone who knows about electronic and mechanics and I had to use a lathe to make a part. You will also have to hav ethe type of sensor that is rivetted together. Some are glued together and these are not openable. AFAIK new ones were £60 a few years ago. Be aware that there are several different types so take the old one when you go to buy the new one.

Well, if it works when you spin the cable, then it must be a fault within the drive gear. Maybe stripped gears, they're only plastic.

Hi Im not very good with cars, as you can probably tell. Do you think i should take it to a peugeot dealer and pay thru the roof prices or try and fixit myself ? i have been to a couple of garages and they said they cannto fix it because its electrical.

Where would i new ones from? are they easy to replace? what would i have to do? roughly how much do they cost ?

Cost? Dunno, but in my experience they very seldom both strip, and I think are quite cheap. You could try a scrap yard maybe but I would get them from your dealer. They are colour coded for different final drives, so if you go to a scrappy you will need to know what you have got.

The driving gear will require the O/S driveshaft removed and the extension on the axle that the driveshaft goes into be removed. Not very easy if you haven't done it before. The driven gear is very easy. Remove the cable from the gearbox end, and, if fitted, the eletrical plug. Then remove the Allen bolt that secures the part in the final drive, and pull it up and out (with a twist if needed). You may lose a bit of oil here. Inspect the driven gear for damage. You could if you're feeling very adventurous jack up the offside, get underneath and stick your finger down the hole on to the driving gear, Get someone to rotate the wheel slowly and feel if the gear is missing anything. It is sometimes peossible for the gear locating lugs to break off, in which case you should be able to stop it rotating even though the wheel is going round!!
