Hi guys. A query for you. I'd like to know where the problem might lie here, so I can talk sensibly to my dealer.
Under normal conditions, driving at 60 MPH, my rev counter reads 2000 rpm, and if I lift my foot off the gas, the revs drop slowly. So far so good. If I accelerate, the revs increase slowly.
Recently, when I first drive off (engine cold), the revs are higher than normal for the road speed (not going into top, I think), and if I come off the gas, the revs drop down to idle (below 1000rpm). So at 60 MPH, I'm seeing 2500rpm, accelerating sees the revs increase rapidly. After say 10 miles, the 'normal' behaviour comes back.
It sounds to me (uneducated guesses) that its either the computer, or the torque converter.

Hmm, I did not realise there were clutches in an auto gearbox (my lack of knowledge).

When the transmission is cold the torque convertor won't 'lock up'. When it does, the revs will drop slightly... kind of feels as if you have an extra gear. Also AFAIK some boxes won't shift into top for the first few minutes.
