This car has a 3.1 L with a 4 speed auto transaxle with 110K miles. The problem is that it will not upshift from first to second by itself when it is "cold". I take it up to about 3K RPM then back off the gas and as the RPMs drop it upshifts to second. I have to do that the firsrt two times it needs to shift up, after that it shifts up normally. Also, the first two times it downshifts from second to first, it clunks. It's a good car otherwise. but I feel like I'm on borrowed time. Thanks for any help.

This may sound dumb, but I always mention it first. Have you checked the fluid level and condition?

That was my thought also, make sure the fluid is full, and have the transmission serviced. Also make sure the traction button is not turned on.
