1996 grand am runs poorly and poor mileage

I have a 1996 Grand Am with approximately 180,000 miles. For about a year now, the check engine light and ETS light have stayed on constantly. Severe hesitation when trying to accelerate. Poor fuel mileage. The headlights tend to stay on even on a bright sunny day. Took the car to Advance Auto, borrowed their code reader and could not pull codes from the car. Fuses are good. Found the wires from the O2 sensor were corroded. Disconnected battery, reconnected O2 wires, reconnected battery and the car drove excellent, for a while then same problem. Bad O2 sensor AND something else since I can't pull codes from the computer?

Thank you,

Thanks for the reply. The fuse is in and good however, the lighter itself is not. I don't think that would make a difference though. Last night when I got home from work, I disconnected the battery and then this morning reconnected the battery. Lights are out (for now), still accelerates the same but the computer may still be readjusting itself (providing the computer is still good). Going to wait until the first time the lights flash or come on for good and then will take it and try to read the codes again.
