2000 GT Tie Rods / Serpentine Belt

Just got back from the dealer .. 2000 Grand Prix GT with 45K needs a new serpentine belt and the outer tie rod is "loose and needs to be replaced".

Wanted to get an independent, 3rd party opinion as to whether or not this seems reasonable after 45K and also as to whether or not the quoted prices are reasonable:

Serp. belt - $69.96 Outer tie rod - $167.50

Thanks. S.

Belt may be tie rod end perhaps not unless you hit the curb a few times.

Tie rod end wear is very normal on these vehicles. I see lots of them that are worn out quite prematurely. Serp belt...have a look at it...does it have a ton of little cracks....and how deep are they? If it has the cracks...put a new one on for your own piece of mind.

Check the prices yourself. Dealer parts are almost always higher but aftermarket parts may not always be as good.

I've run serpeentine belts well past the recommended change period, I think in 91 it was every 30,000 miles . I've gone over a 100,000 on a few, but then again I rotated belts with three extra I've had in the trunk. I bought a new belt in April at a dealer a friend works at, I get parts at his cost - list price was $40.98 + tax = my cost was $31.06

Not sure about your tie rod. I have no experience with these greaseless front end parts or any knowlege at how long they last. My grease fitting equipped front end parts are all original.

Good Luck

your local auto store should have the serpentine belt. Yes, my 2000 that I had also went through an outer tie rod on drivers front side at about 30,000 miles. You can get it cheaper than 167. My local autozone carried them..I dont remember the price though. I am pretty sure it was under a 100

My tie rods had to be replaced only after only 25k, was in my case still under warranty.

sounds about right, maybe the tie rod end was curbed or ran over something
