BMW E39 tie rods

Car has just passed an MOT with an advisory about play on the nearside tie rod. But the play, (on the inner ball joint) is more than I'm happy with. Anyone know how much I can expect to pay for a new tie rod on it's own? I usually use 'realoem.com' to give a guide price, but on tie rods they only give the Part No without any price. TIA. Mike.

It might just be a common 'fault' on these steering racks. Mine has had an advisory on this for several years, but doesn't show any symptoms on the steering. Funnily, it's just had an MOT at my local specialist, and they didn't mention it.

They're on the ECP site. Cheapest is 23.56+VAT and the dearest (stainless) ones are 45.54+VAT.

Cheers Dave. Apparently the MOT test doesn't specifically cover play in the rack, or the rack ball joints, only play at the wheels. The examiner told me the tolerance was 75-80mm!. I think he must have meant 7.5- 8mm. :-) On mine, the play at the n/s wheel was about 3mm. Maybe I'm being over fussy, but unless a new tie rod is horrendously expensive, I'd like to replace it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to things mechanical. Mike.

Thanks Stu. Cheaper than I thought. GSF also have them at £23 + VAT. Fairly local to me so I'll order one to collect later in the week. Stainless steel ones seem a bit pointless though. Mike.

My E38 passed recently with a totally knackered rear tie rod and I've had other cars fail with a 10th of the play. On mine I think they just forgot to check it though.
