95 grand prix fuel pump

A friend of mine has a 95 grandprix and has had the fuel pump replaced about a year ago it seem like it may be gone again (after wacking on the gas tank it fired up and was able to drive it home) but now nobody home!!!! Is the fuel pump a common problem on this model and if so does replacement require dropping the tank

Thanks

Fuel pumps are a common problem with any car if you dont know how to prevent problems with it. Ask your friend if he runs his tank near empty before he gets gas. Two things must be adhered to if you want a fuel pump to last.

  1. Dont run the gas tank below a quarter of a tank!
  2. Replace fuel filter as recommended in your owners manual. If you dont do either of those you burn up your pump. If you do follow those 2 rules that pump should last well past 300k miles.

If you wacked the tank and it fired up...that's an almost sure sign that either the fuel pump or the wiring in the tank is faulty. I had a truck in the other day...no start, wacked the tank and away she went. Dropped the tank....turned out to be burnt wiring connections in the fuel pump module. I'd say that you need to drop the tank, pay close attention to all the wiring connections, keeping an eye out for melted plastic at the connectors, discolored pins that give you a clue about a poor connection and possible arcing. If all the wiring looks good, put a new fuel pump in it.

It's just the way Electric fuel pumps are when you don't keep gas in it :) I had the same problem 10 years of the original fuel pump on my olds, 2 years on the replacement, and 6 months on the new one.

disconect the fuel line at the carburator. also disconect the coil wire to prevent starting, crank the motor for 15-20 seconds, it should pump

4-6 ounces of fuel into a standard measuring cup. carefull that the coil wire dont ignite the gasoline stupid !

I don't say much here, but I have to chime in on a slightly off topic issue. This character snipped-for-privacy@webtv.net may have some good things to say, but he/she needs to stuff the condescending, everyone is stupid BS. I don't know about anyone else, but I am about to kill file anything from a webtv.net address

he/she

Yeah, this individual is kind of direct with the descriptive adjective. Hopefully they will lighten up.

That guy has me baffled as well. And whats with his silly site that looks like a really bad piece of spam? Did he get his automotive education from one of those TV commercials about learning in your home? I dont think that guy would or could last very long in the real world with his social or automotive skills.
