Check engine colour ?

I was reading something somewhere about the check engine light being multi coloured. If it is orange it means that there is a minor problem (sensors, etc...) and if it is red then it is a serious engine problem and you should pull over immediately. Anybody know anything about this ? Is this on all cars or just some makes ? Or was it just a load of BS ?

KDawg, someone's sending you up the river. Under California law, the "Check Engine Light" must be amber.

From memory the way it works is stays on steady if there's a fault that the ECM has detected but is minor enough to allow continued operation, and flashes if its major and immediate shutdown is required or serious damage could occur.

No, it's not multi-colored. The only such indication of an immediate problem is the Check Engine light flashing once a second on an OBD-II (1996 and later) vehicle, which indicates a misfire level sufficient to potentially cause catalytic converter overheating/damage.

I smell BS. On most GM cars, a flashing check engine light means serious shit is happening. A steady light, less so.
