New Battery did not correct starting problem

Sears said my battery was 'bad' and I replaced it today but found I was trying to start it 5 times (cold start) even after replacing battery. Took it back and they said new batter 'good' and to see dealer? Anyone out there know what this could be? Am I stuck going to the dealer for an expensive diagnostic 'work up'? The starter, alternator, and some kind of 'drainage' was OKAY as per Sears. Could this be a fuel system problem. Any experience or educated guesses please? This Grand Prix is has just 44,000 miles on it. Could it need a tune up? Would that affect starting problems? Also, after going a block, twice it has happened that the accelerator pedal 'stuck' about an inch depressed and the car looses power..does not turn off but is at a 'stall, stumble?'...over the phone dealer said it could be the throttle system needing cleaning? Input greatly appreciated. THANKS!

I have no idea what you are talking about. What is your car doing wrong?

You need to get smart enough to determine what kind of problem you want to solve. You can ask us, but it won't do much good. Mostly you need to think about what the problem is. Here's what I mean:

The engine doesn't turn at all The engine turns too slowly The engine turns fast but never starts The engine starts but then it quits again and I have to start it again. The engine runs badly. THESE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!!!!!

The job of your battery and your starter is to turn the engine until it starts running. You need to be able to figure out what sounds normal when this is happening. The time to figure out what's normal is when you don't have a problem. Then, once you figure this out, you can rule out or rule in battery and starter problems when your car is hard to start.

Now, you didn't really explain much about what you're trying to fix, at least not in enough detail to make sense of. It's not easy to diagnose things by ASCII. You gotta be more descriptive. Since you started it 5 times, it appears it must have quit running 4. That might be a good problem to work on.

What years' your car? What engine? I had a 3.1L and it was hard to start because of the ignition board that the coils mount on. I kept thinking it couldn't be that, but eventually it fried and I found out when I replaced it. I also am a firm believer in knowing your fuel pressure when you start troubleshooting, especially if it's mainly a cold engine problem. You can check it for free (borrow the gage from Autozone) so it's incredibly lame and pathetic to insist on not measuring it. But still, people persist.
