pontiac sunfire alternator?

hey..i have a question(of course) ok so I own a 97 pontiac sunfire with about 145 000 on it...anyways, just took a long trip in it and then hadnt used it for a week or so..started up fine, but battery light was on..half an hour later, all of the gage lights came on and it felt like the car kept trying to die on me..eventually the whole car just turned off..waited a while, turned it on and revved it normally and it was fine for a little while until all of the gage lights came on and the gages for temperature and rpms etc kept fluctuating as the car kept trying to die. Thought that maybe the computer was confused and had to reset itself, so I unplugged the positive cable on the battery-cable wasnt corroded. After a day(forgot about it) plugged it bak in and then turned on the car. Now, as soon as i turn it on, all of the gage lights come on again and they fluctuate right away instead of waiting a while but now it makes this weird sound..almost like the car wont catch..i think it might have something to do with the alternator but i dont really know all that much about cars so any advice on what it could be and how to check it would be great-THANK YOU

my 2 cents: Unplug the battery and check the wire/connections to the alternator. Even if it looks okay the wires will rot inside the casing, and if electricity has trouble flowing through they heat-up like an iron and self-destruct.

I had the EXACT same problem, I replaced the alternator and BAM...it fixed it all.
