996 - a/c fault. Any clues?

I bought a 1998 996 Carrera 2 from a Porsche specialist recently. In the service history I noticed a complaint of an aircon fault that was marked up as "no fault found". During the test drive, the vents were blowing warm air and the dealer promised it was a simple job to recharge the gas and this was done prior to delivery.

About 3-4 weeks after buying the car, there started a loud whirring noise, at first I thought was a tiptronic fault as it was engine speed related. Seemed to be coming from the front of the car, not the engine, but that could have been mechanical transmission of the sound.

The noise got worse and could be heard over the radio. On investigation I found it went when the a/c pump was switched off.

I booked the car into the dealer and before I could get there, the a/c system lost it's cooling ability over 2-3 days. I left the pump off after that.

The dealer has just called to say they ran the car and everything works fine (it didn't the morning I dropped it off). He said they have recharged the gas "just in case" but that it worked on arrival. Odd as it was broke for the previous 1,000 miles I drove and I don't have finger trouble!

The dealer service is great, the car is under warranty anyhow, but I wondered if anyone has had similar problems with the 996? Apparently everything is normal at the moment and the a/c guy listened round the pump with a stethoscope and announced all was well.

The fault was not intermittent but disappeared once the car reached the dealer. Any clues?

Thanks in advance

Colin
