What oil to use?

I just bought an 85.5 Porsche 944 about a week ago, its a great little car with a low 105,000 miles. I was wondering if you Porsche guys use synthetic oil or normal in your cars? It has the synthetic in it right now, but I was thinking about buying that oil thats formulated for older engines. Not like a Porsche engine ages the way most motors do, but its not exactly new either.

Thanks for the help.

P.S When they came out with the new dash in 85.5, were there any changes/updates to the motor or did they just swap in the same 2.5L from the "early" 944s without doing anything to them? Thanks again..

Wellll.....you'll get as many differing opinions to this question from as many writers as there are in this newsgroup. It's been beat to death here before, but it's been a while.

History for you to peruse:

* Some will offer other opinions, be they mechanics or others in the know about Porkers. I'd venture to say that not a one of them will recommend that you use an oil formulated for older motors. Without getting too long winded about it, if the engine is currently using synthetic oil and everything is fine, then stick with the synth. Synthetic oil is a better performing oil than dino oil. Period. That fact does not intend to indicate that all cars should use it. Older cars don't have the seal integrity to withstand the finer molecular nature of synthetic oil. They tend to leave more oil on the garage floor. Part are also looser in older engines, so oil pressure suffers. Perhaps there are other maladies related to this, but suffice to say that it's a trickier affair with the older cars. Usually, it would be in league with a rebuild. I did put it in my old '79 911 and it helped the car with faster revs, cooler temps, etc. Dunno what was in her before that. No extra leaks.

Let's read about oil:

The Porsche factory endorses Mobil 1. All dealer mechs and many indy mechs will put Mobil 1 in your car if you ask them to simply "change my oil." All newer P-cars will have synthetic in them. They need it. You'll need to make the decision about which synthetic oil you use. Back when you're car was made, Shell was probably the factory choice for oil? Things change. There are several good synthetic oils out there today. Mobil 1, Kendall, Shell and Redline to name a few. I use Redline and I think it works great.

Sorry for the 'long winded' thing. __it happens sometimes. Obviously, someone will have the good grace to correct my words if I've misspoke somewhere within.

The knowledge from someone else will have to answer this one. I have none to offer...here.

Synthetic oil has been about for nearly 30 years. Your 85 was designed for synthetic oil. Regards, Martin
