Long drive comfort tips?

Hello.

My wife and I about to go on a long trip in a couple of weeks (over 20 hours of driving.) I've been happy with my 2006 Prius, but have noticed that on long drives my hips can start to get sore. (I'm rather tall).

I was originally going to ask if there are any seat cushions that might help, but I think I'll expand it to a general request for tips on increasing comfort for long trips.

Thanks

- Jason

My husband's mother recently bought his 2004 Prius. She raves about how she finds it so much more comfortable on her long drives to/from ME/NY than her previous car, a Subaru Legacy wagon. (She's also in love with the 6CD changer.)

Anyhow, I asked her what cushions she uses for her driver's seat. (She transferred them from her Subaru to her "new" Prius.) This is her response:

I put the gel cushion on the bottom and the other on top. I personally like to use both, but seperately either works well just depends on your needs.

I'm sure these can be found perhaps at somewhat lower prices if people want to search. Brookstone also has specials which is when I bought them.

I'll also suggest that you plan to make some stops along the way. Get out of the car for a few minutes every couple of hours, stretch, use a restroom, break the monotony of driving. (You'll probably need a pit stop more often than the car will!) Much of the uncomfort is just from forcing your body to sit in the same position for a long period...

Great advice, Michelle. For older riders especially, regular "get out and stretch your legs" stops are also medically advisable to prevent dangerous blood clots in the legs. (A little tip from my wife, the geriatric nurse.)

I would suggest that stopping once an hour for a short "bend and stretch" is even better. I would also point out that reducing the quantity of fluids will tend to even out the drive and let -you- decide when you want to stop, and not some annoying part of your anatomy...

A good audio book, or two, passes the time rather nicely. Not exactly an answer to your request, but it will take your mind off of your aching hips.

My favorite thing on a long trip is finding the cheapest motels, one had rates by the hour, now why would that be?

That must be for people who don't need a lot of sleep ;-)
