The greater energy content will be REFLECTED in the calculation--so? It's still a calculation of "volume in against miles driven". Energy content doesn't play in that particular calculation.

Tell us again how a "volume per miles" calculation requires knowledge of the energy content of the fluid itself, instead of simply reflecting the energy content of the fluid itself.
Work per gallon. Figure it out. Take your time.
Your question is irrelevant to finding the answer to the original question. The two factors in mpg are miles, the distance traveled, and gallons. You don't need to know the energy content of a gallon to measure it. A gallon is a unit of volume, not energy.

Hardly 'ad hoc'; *consistently high* trip computer calculation.
And the energy content of the fuel is not the answer. It doesn't even enter into the calculation. The calculation only includes distance traveled in miles and volume of fuel in gallons. The volume of the fuel in gallons is calculated based on the flow rate of the injectors and the length of the pulses they are kept open for, both recorded in the computer data. If the injector is not the size it is supposed to be the volume passing through it is calculated incorrectly and you will come up with a consistently high or low mpg because the volume being entered for each pulse is incorrect. It has nothing to do with energy content, just calibration.
