My 1998 420 SLDT with 109K miles is beginning to baulk when trying to change up or down the box. Sometimes it changes without problems, other times it just will not go into any gear unless I really crash it in. When in a gear, if I push the gear lever to one side I can hear a whining noise. This also occurs sometimes when trying to push it into a gear. When it refuses to go into a gear I find that if I push the gear lever and bring the clutch up slowly and slightly, it will go in gear.
The clutch pedal is higher than the brake pedal but the clutch is not slipping and is very smooth in operation.
Anyone have any ideas whether this is likely to be a clutch or gearbox problem?
