Focus Gearbox Issue

Hello Peeps

The gearbox on our Focus makes a whiring sound with the clutch pedal up, worse when cold, gear changes are fine and smooth apart from the very ocassional crunch going into reverse.

Is this likely to be low gearbox oil or has the input shaft bearing had it?

2001 Focus 1.6 Zetec IB5 Gearbox 48,000 miles - probably all in town!

Could be the clutch release bearing. Gearboxes are sealed for life units and at 123,000 miles, my Mondeo one is still devoid of leaks. Despite being sealed for life, Ford had the sense to put in filler and drain plugs.

If it was the release bearing wouldn't it make a noise when the pedal is down rather than up?

It depends, if it's not sliding smoothly on the spigot then you can get it.

No, cos down it is under pressure and rotating properly. Foot up it it idle and can rattle/whinge.

if the noise dies down with the clutch pedal pushed down (and in gear to make sure everything in the box is stationary) then it will be gearbox bearings, usually the first one to go is the input shaft bearing. Worth checking the oil level but almost certainly too late, pull off the plastic cover on the front, undo the 8mm allen head, usually oil will dribble out, if it doesn't then check the level using a small allen key dipped into the box, if it is more than a quarter inch below the level plug threads then top it up with the correct oil (MT75 oil)

The last few I've had have made the noise when fully up. When you rest your foot on the pedal, it has disappeared.

Just wondering Mr C; the OP has the iB5 box on his car. Shouldn't this use the usual Ford 75W/90 gear oil? The level should be 10-15mm below the level plug.

The MTX 75 box is only fitted to 2.0 litre petrol, and diesel variants. I think it is this box that uses the same fluid as the auto boxes, and should be filled to the level plug.

They did on your Mondeo's MT 75 gearbox; the OP's Focus 'box is the iB5, and the only way to drain the oil is by removing a driveshaft.

As the only symptom at present is the noise how long will the gearbox last before it needs replacing?

Also what would be the approx cost of a reconditioned IB5 box supplied and fitted?

the red ford gearbox oil that I have and use is called MT75 oil (comma) AFAIK it is used on all the Ford boxes from the early 80s onward, BICBW Autodata just says 75w90 semi synth

The oil level is probably specified at just below the filler, but in practice they are always above that level from new, so it is probably not that critical, I imagine that in production a tube just squirts in a preset amount rather than fills it to just below the hole.

It's an iB5 box in the 1.6 petrols - the level is specified as a couple of mm below the drain and you check with a bit of bent wire. Also to drain you have to pull a driveshaft annoyingly.
