1986 SAAB

My venerable 1986 SAAB 2000 has done 301,000 kilometers. I am thinking of getting one of the new SAAB 2 models when they come out. Reason? The heater works fine in the Winter, , even in the coldest weather, down to minus 20 C. But in Summertime the temperature gauge indicates that the engine temperature gets up to just below the red line, at which point I stop and let the car cool. I was told the compressor is shot, and needs replacing, and that the air conditioning needs a retrofit as the fluid used in it is a banned substance I love the car, feel safe in it. It was a present from my wife Any comments?? Frank Jackson

Check coolant thermostat in case it's stuck. Check fan thermostat for correct function. Replace coolant radiator if cooling fins are beginning to deteriorate. Don't bother swapping the AC, the car, or the wife. Good luck.

It's about $400 to do the retrofit to get rid of the R12 refrigerant, you need a new receiver/dryer, etc. Unless your compressor motor is binding, it shouldn't affect your engine temp, I would say it's unlikely the A/C is the root of your problem.

Hello, I had the same issue with my '86 900T. I found that there was a short in the electrical system that caused the cooling fans to not run. I had my mechanic rewire them (make sure you use teflon coated all weather copper wiring) and the problem went away. Other issues may be present but that it is a good place to start.
