9000 clutch into 900 8v turbo.

To accompany engine performance upgrades on a 900 8 valve turbo, I have heard of the practice of installing a flywheel and clutch from a 9000 model. I would like to hear from someone who is familiar with this practice as far as level of difficulty, parts that are needed, and essential steps to consider in performing such a conversion. Would it matter if the flywheel and clutch were from a 2.0L or 2.3L engine, are there problems to deal with such as proper engagement of the starter, and are there WWW sites posted addressing such a conversion? I suspect the flywheel should be lightened.

Thanks for any knowledgeable replies, Tony

You need a pre 93 9000 2.3 turbo clutch and flywheel, don`t forget the quill shaft support bearing, its a straight forward swap. The 90 to 93 900 16v turbo clutch is not far behind in terms of size. Lightening the flywheel should be carried out by someone who knows exactly what they are doing, as flywheel failure can be disasterous. It is debatable as to wether lightening the flywheel on a turbo engine will be of any benefit, Regards Tom.

Totally agree - lightening the flywheel loses you some drivability, so you have to consider carefully why you're doing it before going ahead.

Thanks, Tom! Also, Isn't the timing mark not in the same place on the C900 vs the 9k. If so, this would require scribing a mark in the right spot on the 9k flywheel when installing it in a 900.

To be honest I cant remember about the timing mark, But I seem to remember putting a dial gauge down a spark plug hole to mark the flywheel. Regards Tom.

Thank you Tom, Grunff, and Keith for the great replies. I am thinking I should have the 9000 2.3L turbo flywheel lightened to achieve about the same or slightly less moment of inertia as the original flywheel of an 8 valve engine.

Another concern would be the geometry of the flywheel. Isn't the offset for a 9000 flywheel different for that of an early 900? Wouldn't this cause problems for fit as well as engagement of the starter with the ring gear?

I am not familiar with harmonic balancers. Do these provide a balancing affect with the flywheel and clutch or is it mainly for the crankshaft? And what is a quill shaft support bearing? I've never even heard of a quill shaft.

Thanks again, Tony
