C900 pinion bearings

So I'm beginning to think the easiest thing for me to do will be to grab a used transmission from a wrecker and perform at least a partial rebuild on it before sticking it in the car. Is there any way for me to assess the condition of the pinion bearings (or rather check for damage caused by them failing) before I get the thing out of the wreck? There's a couple of C900s there right now which have straight bodies and no rust so that always kinda makes me wonder. I don't wanna go through the trouble of removal only to discover that the one I yank is not rebuildable.

Unfortunately there really isn't much you can do without either driving the car or stripping down the gearbox. :-(

Good luck.

Oh yeah, sorry about that. I'm about 30 miles east of Cleveland, Ohio in the US. From the last time I tried to give this thing away: Not sure about the exact condition of either engine or xmission, was supposedly running when pulled. The engine and trans are from a '87 16 valve turbo Saab something, miles unknown. Xmission feels ok, seems to shift into gears smoothly. Grabbing the axel shafts and twisting them, there doesn't seem to be an unusual amount of play, would probably replace pinion bearings prior to swapping out. Engine turns by hand with reasonable force. Has turbo, injectors, alternator, AC compressor and stuff. I had considered dropping this into my '92 conv but chickened out. Way easier, cheaper, and probably safer to get another car. I don't have the APC box or harness, the dipstick is missing in action, and I don't have an intercooler. Bring something somewhat large to tote this thing. I don't have an engine lift handy, (for now anyway) so bring one of those too. First come..............
