I'm female, so please bare with me....

Over the last couple of months my H reg 9000 turbo has developed a bit of a 'stutter' when I'm accelerating hard. It went to have some work done for it's MOT about a month ago and had a new exhaust system fitted (I have no idea if the two things are connected but the guy at the garage seemed to think that might solve it!?). Today I took it for it's first long run since then.........Cornwall to B'ham and back. The 'stutter' seems to be back especially when I'm trying to hold the car at a cruising speed......a little like mild hic-cups......and the turbo needle sort of 'tics' up and down a bit too. I'm probably not describing this very well but please excuse me.....I'm female....I can cook etc but my mechanical skills don't go much beyond putting oil and water in the car! Thank you for any help identifying out my car problem before some mechanic 'lifts the bonnet, tuts and makes me take out a second mortgage'!!! Regards, Denise

Hi Denise - there are of course many things that can cause this but 2 basic things that come to mind in no order:

1) gas filter 2) vacuum leak

Do not know if your version is fitted with an oxygen sensor, but if it is, I would also check the sensor. As they fail, they can cause this symptom by send erratic readings to the computer.

I'm not sure. All I know is it's the full turbo, 175 bhp model.................and I love it! (sorry!) I noticed however on the previous MOT/service (I have ALL the history.....even 'non' dealer!) that there was a very 'minor loss of pressure on the turbo'. Could it be anything to do with the turbo? I'm a bit paranoid as I lost my 900 (my fav car ever!) when the cracked cylinder head let water get in to the turbo. I can't tell you how upset I was...............I cried off and on for 3 days! I think it was intentional. Otherwise it would suggest that females have no understanding of mechanics, and that can't be true!

I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Oh wait. But no, I don't think your problem is related to the turbo specifically, unless you're getting grindy or gravelly noises from it. More likely are the other suggestions you've seen here. One of those may be _making_ the turbo underperform, but the turbo itself has obvious and dramatic failure modes, rather than the subtle problems you're describing.

A vacuum leak will effect the turbo. I had an '86 9000T and there was this one vacuum hose that always got removed during any service and caused the car to very poor accelleration, etc.. The hose also vibrated off every now and then.
