I had a ticking sound from my 1996 9000CS 2.3L, it was worst in the winter, less severe in summer. Turned out it was one of the injectors.

It's a bomb! GET OUT OF THE CAR!

Ok.. seriously now... by "behind the firewall" do you mean "in the passenger compartment" or "in the engine compartment" ? Also, if you turn the key to the "on" position with the car off (all dash indicators lit) do you hear the sound ?

Sounds like it might be the purge valve. especially if check engine light is on

Is this a V6 ?If so, going to the dealer for the 90K service will also get you a (very necessary) free timing belt change from Saab. This is worth $500 by itself so it might be worth it. If it's a 4-cyl, I would not pay for the "90K service" but would have qualified independent mechanic look the car over for any _needed_ service.

As to the check engine light - 50% of these are due to a loose or defective gas cap. Make sure it's tight. If that's the problem, it will go away after a few days once the cap is tight. It's just a guess but it's a 50/50 shot.

If it's not the gas cap and you have a turbo, it could be the "DI cassette". If the DI is throwing check engine lights, the car will probably be running really rough. If not, I doubt it's the DI.

HOWEVER, since you live in the Boston area, here's an easy way to get some more information on the check engine light. There's a code stored in the computer that describes what it is. Go to a local Autozone store. Ask the guy behind the counter to come out and read the code for you. Write down whatever it says on his display and post it here. Don't leave anything out. This is a FREE service at Autozone. Don't buy anything, just post it here and we'll give you a pointer to the next step.

FYI - I'm assuming you really mean "check engine" and not "service due" displayed on the SID. The Service Due reminder lights periodically and you can clear it by holding down the SID Clear button for about 20 seconds (keep holding until it beeps... and not the quick "cleared" beep ... a later one.

Depending on what you mean by "the Boston area", you might try "the Doctor" in Westford or Acton, MA. They have a good reputation. Village Saab in Acton has great service but charges dealer prices.
