Saab 9000 Auxiliary Drive Belt

No particular schedule, but inspect the belts for cracks, fraying etc. The belts can last for years, but if breaks then you're stuck. Not expensive to replace. Cost of one belt ~GBP 30.

I change the belt and the idler pulleys at between 60 and 75kmi. The belt will outlast the pulley bearings. A friend has thrown a belt and I have had 2 used 9ks that I replaced the pulleys as soon as I got them because they were making noise...

If it goes you are stuck. Job is a pain in the backside to attempt yourself, book of lies shows you how to build a special tool. Me, I stick to designing bridges and leave fixing the car to my mechanic! Getting wet cold and fed up all day Sunday is not my idea of fun! Especially as my drive is a 1 in 3 slope, and the flat road outside is narrow and busy.

For interest, my belt was in good condition, but split longitudinally wrapping itself around power steering pump pulley - oh joy! My mechanic thinks it may have been damaged by road debris?

Had a similar failure on my better half's GM 900. This was a pulley breaking which destroyed the belt, that bill was about £120 from memory as both guide pulleys had to be replaced as well.
