Saab 9000 Transmission swap

My brother (lucky soul that he is) owns both a 1995 9000 Aero and a 1992

9000 Turbo. The Aero has a blown gearbox and the '92 turbo has a blown engine, both vehicles have 5 speed transmissions and he would like to pull the good gearbox he has and mate it to the good engine he has with the aim of having a road going Aero once again. Could anyone comment on the feasibilty of this course of action? Thank you.

probably not do-able. The '92 has the old slant block design from the

900 and the '95 has the straight block designed for transverse installations (NG900, 9k, 9^5, 9^3). The '95 has tranny drain plug and the '92 does not. A rebuilt tranny would be the best suggestion I could make. The Aero is one GREAT car and nothing like it is made anymore. I would think it would be worth the effort and money to get it back on the road if it is in nice shape. Where are the cars located? As for the '92, a blown engine? If it is just a head gasket, it may be the least expensive to put back in order. I may be interested in one or both.

Depends.. If the '92 is a long block 2.3 or 2.0 - it is probably not very straight forward.

My understanding is that the post '94 5 speed transmissions are *not* a direct bolt up to most previous years - but - I could very well be wrong. You are on the right trail regarding keeping the year and model engine in the 1995 - as it is nearly impossible to change engines across model versions without major electrical surgery.

Most folks in your brothers spot simply look for a rear-ended wreak that will match-up VIN wise - grab the whole power train from the hubs in and keep the old engine as a spare for later.
