Saab Motors...

Are the motors in a 1990 Saab Turbo and a 1987 Saab Turbo the same....and does it make any difference if the 87 is a standard and the 90 is an automatic?? Any help that you can give my college age daughter would be great!

Mostly. Depends what you mean.

Not much.

Do you have any specific questions? What are you trying to do?

What am I trying to do....? I am trying to get the 90 back on the road...and think that there is something wrong with the timing belt?chain?..wont start...sounds like metal grinding when I attempt to start it...just died in the yard of a friend...after having been driven there...and have an '88 Saab that I could use as parts...OR the 88 is running but the strut mount is rusted...so...which one is the better to get on the road..arent you sorry you asked??? Sounds like the starters not engaging with the flywheel ring gear properly to me. Try and bump start it. If it runs then replace the starter and/or flywheel

It's a chain. As Carl says, could be as simple as a starter motor fault. You really need to pin down what's wrong before starting to consider engine swaps.

Does the engine turn over?

Was it running ok before? How did it 'die'?

When you say strut mount, what exactly do you mean? It doesn't have McP struts. Do you mean spring mount? Shock absorber mount? Front or back?

Not yet.

Sounds like a stuck starter motor. Not sure what the overall fix is, other than getting a new starter, but try putting the car in drive (the '90 is the auto, right?) and before cranking, rock the car back and forth. Then try cranking.

Carl says? Now I know my newsfeed has gone screwy. I can only see me, Matt (**-**) and you, Grunff ... and *two* same postings from LOJ. I'm gonna go to bed and wait for the network guys at TeleWest to get it sorted!

Bon chance LOJ. Give it some bump starting, rocking and good old fashioned swearing. If you crank it too much, wait an hour or so until the (flooded) engine clears ... Assuming you have fuel in the tank???
