Stamp out Spam Postings (Long instructions)

We can reduce or stamp out spam postings, which many of us find objectionable and a waste of our bandwidth. Shaw Cable say the following (and they seem to do something about reports to them). The more that get reported, the fewer stay around.

IMPORTANT =========== Please report only one originating IP Address at a time.

All logs and evidence should be submitted in plain text, our email reader does not accept attachments, so your log must be in the body of the email.

Proprietary log formats or screenshots will NOT be acted upon.

REQUIRED INFORMATION FOR USENT/NEWSGROUP REPORTS ==================================================== Please identify the 'NNTP posting host' IP address or hostname when reporting Usenet violations.

If you are reporting newsgroup abuse, please be aware that our (Shaw Cable in Canada) Acceptable Use Policy allows up to 9 cross posts as long as they are "on topic".

This line is added to the header of a posted article by the server. The contents of the header is either the IP address or the fully qualified domain name of the client host posting the article. The fully qualified domain name should be determined by doing a reverse lookup in the DNS on the IP address of the client. If the client article contains this line, it is removed by the server before acceptance of the article by the Usenet transport system.

This header provides some idea of the actual host posting the article as opposed to information in the Sender or From lines that may be present in the article. This is not a fool-proof methodology since reverse lookups in the DNS are vulnerable to certain types of spoofing

Shaw's instructions are good, and if you'd like to do it quickly and easily, spamcop.net lets you report email and usenet spam for free. You can have their system show you how it reads the headers and which ones are important, so it's not just useful and free, but it's educational.
