Does anyone know from when, the MOT certificate had to be embossed with the Garages name on it?
My sister got pulled over by the police and had to produce her documents. Police reckon the stamp used to emboss the certificate was stolen over 10 years ago. I didn't think garages were using embossing stamps back then but could be wrong. Does anyone remember?

I've just looked back through the old MOT's for my MGB GT that I bought new in May 1974 and still own.
The MOT issued in April 1981 has a rubber stamp but the one issued in April 1982 is embossed. Exactly when between these two dates embossing started, is anybody's guess but at least that should narrow it down for you.
The Embossing stamp was first mentioned in the 1981 Motor Vehicles (Test) Regulations. No mention (AFAICS) in the 1976 edition.
GI know for certain that I have been using it for the past eleven years that I have been testing.
