noisy turbo

'87 900T16 Im getting a loud metal on metal grinding noise, oh dear I hear you say. the noise is only when there is load and I'm pretty sure its the turbo as the noise only starts when the pressure gauge starts on the orange and gets worse on more load. My main problem is not being able to find where the noise orgininates from as have to be driving to get the noise. Is there anyway that I can get the turbo to spin fast with bonnet open and me looking in? Obvious answer is put on resisitance rollers but I aint got any.

Ive previously posted on smoke from exhaust on release of accelerator but that stopped by its self. The turbo was put on only 2000 miles ago and is still under waranty so would like to know what is the likely source of noise before i get it off and ship it to the turbo shop.

I'll appreciate any ideas Thanks

Sounds like the turbo. Well, from here anyway...

I'd call the shop & see what they say. Sounds like maybe a rebuild that didn't go right, but they might have some specific requests on what you should do before you uninstall it.

If you have an automatic then it's easy, put it in drive, stomp on the brake, and slowly give it some gas. If it's a manual your only option other than a chassis dyno is some serious abuse to the clutch, though only for a few moments.
