2000 SL2 -- SES Light -- Will It Pass Inspection

I own a 2000 SL2 with 15000 miles in the state of New York. Since

12990 miles and 2 days past warranty expiration, I have had car in for service for the same SES code - P0442 and Saturn dealership os unable to repair. They have no idea what is wrong. I am worried about it passing inspection in New York State. Also, I am worried about being able to sell this car or use it for a trade-in. Any comments?

I have an older Chliton's repair manual (1991-1998) that says a code P0442 is an EVAP Canister Purge (system) with a fault description of "Small Leak Detected".

Is there another dealer in your area you could try?

Anyone else care to take a guess on this one?

"Unable to repair" is just not something a dealer is supposed to say. What diagnostic steps did they attempt?

If the diagnostics don't indicate a bad fuel tank pressure sensor, they're supposed to connect an EVAP smoke generating device to the system and check for leaks with an ultrasonic leak detector. Possible leak areas given include the fuel cap, EVAP canister, fuel sender assembly O-ring, or fuel filler neck, or any of the hoses/connections to these components.
