My guess is your "buddy" is using 87 octane fuel and in need of a tune up (plugs and wires) because chip or not the SOHC engine is no match for the DOHC engine when it is it good running order and properly feed. I recently got my daughter a clean used 97 SC2 with the DOHC engine and I must say that I am very inpressed with how zippy it is as it feels a lot stronger than its rating and a lot strong than SOHC units I have driven.(it pulls strongly and without hesitation to its
6500 RPM redline and it is just getting warmed up at 4000 RPM) A SOHC 2 valve engine simply cannot match the breathing and HP producing abilty above 4000 rpm of a DOHC 4 valve engine.
Unless you put the car on a dyno to prove this, I would contend that it absolutely does not.
But if you believe that your car is faster, then you got your money's worth.
