The '56J motor was indeed a big one, but the idea was that the Packard could be expanded quite a bit -- the Stude and AMC versions were 352", Packard themselves used 352" and 374", and for '57 they had already tested a 413" version (of course that never saw production). I do not know for sure, but there may have been other sizes for marine service.
I know that Jag six cylinders used the Detroit Gear tranny for a number of years after Studebaker "abandoned" it. Unfortunately, it was the "150" version which was often overwhelmed by the big Jag engine. I have one out in the country and plan to install the "dipstick/fill tube" on to my '55 Prez sedan at some point...
Clock it? Roll the engine to TDC #1, drop the distributor in so the rotor is almost pointing to the #1 plug (back it up by about 10°) and grab that tooth. You're done.
Oil pump slot's no problem at all. Line the distributer up as you normally would and if the slot's not aligned, place the clamp in place, snug it bit don't tighten it, pull the coil wire, hang onto the vacuum advance and have someone bump the key. The distributor will plop down as soon as things line up. Re-snug the clamp and you're good to go.
Took longer to type that it does to do!
Why would a high rise affect the difficulty of changing plugs??? Headers might, but an intake??
