best anti-RF ignition wiring TYPE



background: I am getting my vintage AM/FM Delco reconditioned with the intent of getting that "cruis'n feeling" I will also add non-vintage sound deadening, and other electrical/static improvements noted here and elsewhere. Thanks for the help.



My query in a different area. In the sixties, I was always changing ignition cables attempting to minimize "ignition buzz" on my radio. (not really a problem since the mid-70s). Back then, I found one type that worked ok, but I cannot find it any more. (Most of this help in the 60's came from that Hams, thus I am including them in this question)



Now for the "new" question. What "TYPE" of ignition wiring for maximum should I get for my Avanti (with modern electronic distributor) R2?

then out an RF filter on the alternator.. from the battery teerminal on the alternator TO ground, mount ON the alternator.. --Shiva--

Well, Avantis have, or are supposed to have, polished stainless ssteel ignition shielding, so I would question the utility of adding additional shields around the wires under that shielding.

I favor the magnetic (inductive) secondary wire myself. It is supposed to act like a long slender RF choke, which selectively suppresses radio frequency noise, while allowing full voltage to reach the plugs.

Gord, where can you find inductive 7mm plug wires that fit the wire looms? Everything I've looked at that is readily available is 8mm or larger.

You used to be able to get 7 mm Magnetic Suppression Wire from Silver Beauty. I don't know if they are still around. Web search?

I found an outfit that will makeup 7mm wires but won't warranty them if I reinstall the stainless shielding around the wires in the looms or along the left/right banks as they run to each plug.

I'll check on other sources and let you know what I find.

I know that Ray and JP sell the wires that Brian Scott makes, they are the carbon core type however

They are a high performance version of the factory wires, never had a problem with the radio.

Belden made the one I use. It is white in color. I bought it by the spool.

During our 2003 Route 66 trip I found that much of my poor running and starting trouble was due to bad wires. At the suggestion of one of the travelers I went to a NAPA store in Needles, CA and bought a set for a 454 Chev. The only set they had was an Accel hi performance set with solid wire cores (and they were 8mm). I couldn't get them in the looms so I ran without the shielding. I must have wiped out all FM (including my own radio) and TV reception for some distance as I went along. When I got back, I bought a set from Jon Myer- perfect fit and no FM interference. I did have the original suppressors on the alternator and coil. Paul Johnson
