discharge light on

My ammeter light came on in my '56 Champion Pelham. Tell me again how to tell whether its the voltage regulator or the generator?

To test the generator run the engine at 1200RPM or higher and use a jumper wire to temporarily ground the field terminal on the generator, if the charging rate increases (you can check the voltage at the battery) your generator is fine. You can also disconnect the field wire at the regulator and run the engine at about 2000RPM if the voltage drops at the battery your regulator is bad. This is my version of what the shop manual said.

I gotta think that's the terminal with the 'F' next to it. How do I check the voltage at the battery?
