03 Outback H6 - Towing Question

Sep 28, 2003 2 Replies

Howdy all,

Looking through the downloaded shop manuals from the techinfo site, I noticed that the auto transmission in my 03 Outback has a built in transmission cooler. There are hoses that route from the transmission through the radiator and back to the transmission. My question is: Is this type of cooler sufficient for towing or should I look for an aftermarket transmission cooler? Also, has Subaru been adding this type of transmission cooling system to their cars for a while now? I am assuming the AT Temp light on the dash is tied into this system somehow, or does it read the temp right off the transmission?

Thanks Keith

Pretty much ALL automatics use this type of cooler. If you're going to be towing on a regular basis, or close to the max tow capacity, I'd be looking into a beefier tranny cooler.

According to a service rep I spoke with at the dealer, my '00 OBW 2.5 has a built-in tranny cooler as well.
