95 Legacy "wop wop wop" at 40 mph

As in road noise? Can you feel it in the steering wheel too? I'd check the tire balance.

My dad has a '93 Impreza wagon and sedan that both do the same thing. The noise is independent of the engine (noise remains if cruising in neutral) and the frequency increases with speed. The tires appear to be good on both cars. I have not been able to figure out what is causing it.

I had a car that went wop wop wop at 40mph, I thought was from the driver's side front tyre, but couldn't find anything visibly wrong with it, at 90mph the driver's side rear tyre disintegrated! Luckily no other damage done! :-)

Are you sure you don't have a nail in one of the tyres.

Tires!

Tyres is fine.

Tire or tires worn out of round. Been there. Not detectable by a walk round inspection. I had mine checked by the tire shop and was told it is not that uncommon on some vehicles and is due to suspension set-ups. New tires fitted....problem gone.

Mine just started doing that (rear-passanger side) after getting the tires rotated and the passanger side ball joint replaced. That tire would have been front passanger side, so I'm guessing it got worn differently than the other three tires and that's what's making the noise.

Are you saying this only happens at 40 mph? Not at lower or higher speeds? Is the sound associated with drive train, i.e. can you put it in neutral and sound continues without change before slowing down?
