Automatic transmission noise. 2002 Subaru Impreza Sport

While stopped at stop lights in Drive there is a odd shuddering noise coming from my transmission. You can't here this noise outside of the car, and it's only when the car is in gear. I recently checked the fluid level on the auto tranny and it appears to be a little high. Has anyone experienced this same noise or know if a slighty overfull automatic tranny might make funny noises?

Could be just the idle speed is at a certain resonance point. Try stepping on the accelerator slightly (with your other foot on the brake pedal) to raise the rpm by a hundred rpm or so, if the noise goes away, have a shop check the idle speed and adjust it up or down if out of spec. Ed B.

I have an older Legacy Outback with 94000 Miles. I noticed that the trany is producing some vibration in similar conditions as you described. If I put it in N the vibrations go down. Have you tried that.? Maybe the idle speed is off. Well, just guessing,
