ERROR MESSAGES ON VDC MACINTOSH

I have an '01 VDC with the original single CD Macintosh stereo. Sometimes when I put in a disc (or turn it on with a disc already in the unit), it doesn't do anything for about 40 seconds, and then I get an "ER-3", or "ER-6" message on the front display. If I then eject the disc and put it back in, sometimes it plays and sometimes the error message pops up again (either the same one or the other one).

Has anyone else had this problem? If so, did Subaru do anything about it?

Funny you should bring this up. I have an '02 VDC, 33,000 miles. Earlier this week on the way to work, my CD stopped mid track and I got the ER-3 message. I then removed the CD, put another CD in and after about 40 seconds I got an ER-6 message. This was on a very cold, wet morning and the CD's had been in the car overnight. I have not had any problem since, and I am currently assuming that there

*may* have been condenstation on either the CDs or the laser.

My thoughts at the time were 'How will I be able to find out what these codes mean?' and realizing that I probably was not going to get any help from either McIntosh or Subaru .

Let me know if you find out anything, and I'll do likewise. John

John- I called Macintosh direct and they said it sounds like a problem with the transport mechanism, and Subaru would deal with it. I called the local Subie dealer, and explained the problem. They wanted me to bring it in so they could recreate the problem. I said being an intermitent problem, it probably wouldn't happen at the dealership. I said I would take a picture of the display when it happened with my digital camera, so even if they couldn't recreate it they could see that it happens. They said they would have to send the unit to Macintosh, who would either fix or replace the unit. They said it takes about 10 days to get it back. I'm tied up at work for the rest of the year, then I'm bringing it in to have them send it out to Mac. Will let you know what happens when it happens.

I had a feeling it would end up being one of those 'McIntosh says-Subaru says' issues. Nobody will tell you anything. Grrrr. My problem has not reoccurred. John
