Keyless transmitter battery short life

My 2001 Forester keyless transmitters seem to use up their batteries after a couple of months. Intermittently, the LED doesn't even light, so that would rule out problems with the receiver in the car. I have considered these possible causes: 1. defective Enercell batteries (from Radio Shack) 2. corroded switch contacts 3. internal short circuit If it's possible for a lithium battery to die in spurts, then I'd lean toward (1) as the cause.
