New noise under acceleration / load

I've got a 98 outback wagon with 175,000 miles. Over the last couple days I've noticed a new noise - sort of a loose grinding sound when the car is accelerating or under a load. It's only when the car is in gear - ruling out the engine - and i can't hear it if the window is down. I'm kinda worried this might be the transmission main shaft bearing, but you'd think I'd be able to hear it all the time, instead of just when the motor is under a load. Anyone got any idea what this could be?

Wheel bearing comes to mind. Typically when transmission bearings start to go the transmission will also start to jump out of gears.

Hi, Ditto, figure out which side. My kids had rear right wheel bearings replaced.

I just replaced the left, front wheel bearing not that long ago. This noise is similar, but not nearly as pronounced as that was. I suppose it could be one of the other three wheels though.
