Nothing definitive yet but you should probably pay close attention:

Scandal after scandal, extending warranties to fix just vehicles that exhibit a problem which is less expensive than a recall on all, giving Ascent 2019 owners new vehicles because of a welding program error

bad head gaskets, and now bad valve springs. They do test how far they can stretch customer loyalty. I expect my 2002 Legacy won't be included in the recall. Maybe the 2018 Outback will.

I worry about this too but other manufacturers have similar problems.

What they all ought to do is extend drive train warranty to 10 years.

I got notice the other day on extension of the CVT warranty but it does not affect my Forester.

I mentioned here the head gasket problems my son and I both had beyond warranty but were able to get about 1/3 reimbursed.

My wife also has a Forester but after what both son and my problems with ours will not buy another Subaru if it happens on her Forester.

Eventually, Subaru will have to decide whether it wants to stay in the car business or exit it. So far enough people are buying into Subaru's to postpone the question. I have proposed quite a long time ago that Subaru will go bankrupt. I have not changed my mind. Recent development only reaffirm my conviction.

Meaning address the mounting design flaws.

...or exit the business.

Maybe the Chinese could buy Subaru.

The new Subarus would all come with cell phones and WiFi as standard equipment.

It would be active at all times so the Chinese can eavesdrop on everything being said in the car at all times.

The data would be sent by WiFi so people wouldn't become suspicious of their minutes draining away.

If the car is not within range of free WiFi it would store the data until it is.

The New SUbaru would give generous discounts to government employees, military, and people who work for large companies.

What a great opportunity for the Chinese.

Chinese are interested in expanding industrial production. What kind of useful conversations would they eavesdrop on? American management, CEO's, discussing closing shop, moving to China?

Not very useful.

In case you run up against the WSJ paywall, here is a relevant quote from MarketWatch:

"Toyota said its vehicles accounted for about 80,000 of the total. In the U.S., Toyota is recalling about 25,000 Scion FR-S cars manufactured between March 2012 and July 2013. The recalled Subaru vehicles were made between January 2012 and September 2013. Subaru said 101,000 of the recalled vehicles were sold in Japan. A company spokesman declined to say how many vehicles were being recalled in the U.S."

There appears to still be some confusion as to whether any other models are included -- I saw reports on Foresters being included too but it does look to be limited to a relatively narrow time window in any case.

This is in addition to the Ascent recall that will have owners get new cars.

- Recall on valve springs.

- Recall on Ascents.

- Tried to hide a head gasket leak. Their fix was goop in the coolant.

- Takata airbag recalls.

- Recalls for corroding brake lines.

- Recall floor mats that can curl to interfere with pedals.

- Recall due to puddle light shorting causing smoke & fire.

- Recalls on remote key fobs that could inadvertently start the car.

- Recalls on defective steering columns.

- Recalls on defective moonroofs.

- Recalls on wiper motors that could catch on fire.

- Recalls on trannies due to rollaway risk.

- Recalls on trailer hitches.

- Excessive oil consumption.

- Failure of low oil warning causing catastrophic engine damage.

- Warranty extended for CVTs that jerk, shudder, hestitate, and stall.

- Leaking gaskets in CVT's oil pump & chain covers.

- Sensation of bumping (like being rear-ended) when sitting at idle.

- Cheaper eco-friendly bio-degradable soy-based wiring coatings attract chewing rodents.

I'm sure looking at other manufacturers would find a history of defects along with attempting to devalue or hide the consequences.

Salient paragraph:

"A notice about the recall...stated that Subaru?s Forester, Impreza and BRZ models are subject to the recall. All models affected by the recall were manufactured between January 2012 and September 2013."

I know that Foresters are made in Japan; is that also true of Imprezas and BRZs?

I've got a 2013, but it's an Outback, so I'm clear this time.

Well, lets hope so. I wouldn't start enumerating the poultry before they are fully incubated. I'm sure that the official announcement will be more definitive but in theory that won't happen until Subaru delivers the paperwork to the officials in Japan.

Was the press release submitted to the Dow Jones Newswire not official? I doubt they'd have left out an entire model line. And unless the recall includes Imprezas made in the U.S., all of the recalled cars were made in Japan.

To clarify: I don't mean "official" as in submitting offical recall documents to the Japanese transportation authorities. I mean "official" as in it offically came from Subaru; it wasn't just some rumor that DJNW heard about.

So now the question for US owners will be whether to let the underpaid, hurried, overworked and not infrequently incompetent technicians at the local dealership open up, and tinker with the engine for 12 hours, it may never be the same when put back together, or to take a chance and pass on this recall.

Thank you Subaru.

From Consumer Reports today. Still not official-official so far as I can tell but having a bit more detail:

"Vehicles recalled: About 165,000 cars and SUVs, including:

2012 to 2014 Subaru Impreza sedan 2012 to 2013 Subaru Impreza hatchback 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek SUV 2013 Subaru BRZ coupe 2013 Scion FR-S coupe"

It sounds to me that these are exclusively FB engines that are recalled. 2013 Outback I think was the last year of the 2.5L EJ in Outbacks.
