Haven't you noticed that almost all wagons have these airfoils at the rear edge of the roof? These are not spoilers, they are air deflectors which direct air down over the rear window to keep it clear of dirt, snow, etc.
Just drive the same car with and without one and you will see a huge difference.
Ah - I have an old Volvo wagon without a deflector and the rear window gets really filthy when the roads are wet.
