Hi Godfrey!

It's in the gas tank. Basic procedure is to remove an access panel in
the floor beneath the rear seat, disconnect wiring and rubber gas
lines, and remove the plate that carries the fuel pump, level sensor,
and pickup screen. Replacement is the reverse, and use a new gasket
unless the old one is absolutely perfect; unlikely on a 15 YO car.
You might find two access panels; one will be for the pump (oval shape
?), and the second (round ?) will be for a secondary fuel level
sender.
Probably a good idea to disconnect the battery, and drain the fuel
tank (be sure to get _both_ sides) before starting.
Probably an expensive item from Subaru, but should be readily
available from a salvage yard.
Hope this helps.
ByeBye! S.
