I just got a "check engine" light to come on in my '98 Impreza. I did a little "surfing" to look at code readers and scan tools to find out what is causing the light to glow. What is a good scan tool to use or get that will analyze the codes and point me in the right direction. Also, is there any software out there that I could get for my laptop and use it for the analyzer? thanks

Many of the "Big Box" auto parts stores will run a scan for you for free....probably hoping that you'll buy any needed parts from them in appreciation. Not a bad deal. Here is the URL for one inexpensive tool:

I have also seen scan tools for laptops and Palm devices. Look here:

ebay lists several new and used. I have borrowed an Innova from a friend and it seems nice, about $80 at ebay. As stated, try to borrow one or have Autozone or someplace read it unless yo plan to do some serious auto work regularly.
