transmission knocking on 2002 forester

Apr 18, 2011 12 Replies

I have a 2002 forester with manual transmission and 150,000 miles. Since I bought the car (30,000 miles ago the clutch has hopped a bit if I wasn't careful about how I let it engage. This hopping might be the same as the knocking noise reported in this post:

I started to notice last week that the shifter would jiggle more than usual when slowing down. My girlfriend just had the car for the weekend and when she got back the transmission now makes very loud knocking (and you can feel it jumping) if you are not extremely careful with the clutch.

Anyone know the issue here? Could it be as simple as transmission mount?

Thanks for the advice.

I'm not sure what's going on. Could be input shaft bearing or mounts or shifter bushings or????

You might try searching 'subaru clutch judder' (yes - judder) or similar and see if that is what you've been experiencing all these years. I'd try to get a coupla mechanics to test drive the car. Sometimes, someone here will know a good mechanic if you post your city.

I'll search for judder... thanks for the tip. I live in Montreal... anyone know a good mechanic?

What used to happen (called it "hopping") is certainly the "judder" problem that is well known... I figured out how to drive the car without having judder.

But now there is a much more serious issue where it feel like the transmission is literally bouncing up and down if I'm not EXTREMELY careful. The car is pretty much undrivable; it will bounce and knock violently if I accelerate at any reasonable rate.

It may be worth having someone check for frozen U joint too.

Could it still be a frozen u-joint if it stops knocking once I get moving faster?

A mechanic told me it's the u-joint and the whole drive shaft must be replaced :(

Hmmmm...I have heard of folks with older soobs having some Ford U- joint welded in. Dunno if that is still possible.

Maybe do a search for that info.

Nice shootin tex.

How'd you guess? It still seems strange to me that it comes and goes a bit, and is fine at high speeds!?!?!?!?!

I'll look around for posts... thanks again.

Just something I read about a long time ago. Sometimes the bad U-joint is confused with a bad center differential and/or 'torque bind'.

hope your mechanic gets it sorted out for you.
