Tumbler Generator

My wife has an 2005 Outback 2.5XT and a few days ago her check engine light came on and the car didn't want to accelerate. She turned it off, restarted and it has been fine since. We went in to the dealer who said the Tumbler Generator needed to be replaced. Can anyone explain what this part is?

Thanks, IDG

Hi,

I am from the UK but have heard of many US auto terms and suspect the garage is B.S.ing you. Have never heard of a "tumbler generator".

I think it's located between the venturi cognito and the timing belt ratchet.

You mean ported tumbler generator valves

Yeah, that's it. I think my Hillman Minx had one.

The tumble generator is a valve like thing in the intake manifold. The generator breaks up and mixes the incoming air charge to provide a more uniform air mixture at low engine revolutions. I'm not sure if it's ever meant to or needs to be replaced as I thought it was just a mechanical device. ed

It has electronic positioning motors and positioning sensors.

This is fascinating! Obviously it is an important part if Subaru went to all that trouble, so it could actually be the cause of the original problem. Any idea why it is needed in this engine while most others don't need it?

I consider it a real plus because it not only helps emissions and smother warm up but, it also improves low engine speed torque. You do find this type of thinking on more expensive vehicles.
