Hey all,
I'm going to be buying me new tires from tirerack.com here within a week or two. Does anyone here know what major chain stores will take and install pre-purchased tires not from the same store? For example I checked with Costco and because they don't sell the type of tire I want, I asked them if they would install tires for me if I brought in with me, they said no they wouldn't. Does anyone know if any major chains will do this at a nominal cost?

Um, dig around some more at tirerack, they keep a list of installers.

I called the dealership just to get their input, amazingly they will do it. However it's $10 per tire installation fee. Good... bad? The TripleTreads are $109/piece ($436) + around $50 shipping + $40 for installation gives a grand total cost of $526. This is the first time I will have ever had tires replaced on a vehicle of my own. How does that cost stack up for an `01 Outback? Is the cost of all of this worth it for the TripleTreads??
I think that fee sounds very good for a dealership - likely it is a good will service. Triple treads are very highly regarded. I've never owned any and have only read of a complaint of a little noise - though one wonders if new tires might always seema alittle noisy due to having deeper tread than the worn -out tires they replace and you've become accustomed too. Be certain to rotate them - every oil change or certainly every alternate oil cjange at least.

My local TirePlus store said they would instal them, but then, they offered to get the tires themselves, and for the same price as the tire rack, they included the road hazard coverage.
It was a pleasure to deal with TirePlus.

What does the road hazard guarantee offer?
I find that it typically includes repair of the tire if repairable. May include rebalancing. Some include replacement policies if unrepairable.
I guess it depends on the store chain, but in my case it includes:
- Free flat repairs.
- Prorated replacement of the tire if it becomes unusable due to a road hazard.
- Free balancing for the life of the tire.
You are aware that the triple treads seem to worsen the fuel economy, right?

Which in case of Subaru would most likely be useless, because you may have to replace all 4 tires and they won't cover that.
Keep in mind that many chains that do this will fix ANY flat, no questions asked. They have no idea if you bought the tire from them, and they don't ask for receipts.
$19 seems very good for a dealership.
Around here, Belle Tire charges $10/tire for mounting/balancing and discount tire charges $14.
However, I used to buy tires from tirerack all the time, and what I found is that a lot of times tire shops don't like that... many will give you an attitude like "you went somewhere else to buy tires??!?!"
I have a better suggestion for you, since most places (I know discount tire will) will match or even beat competitors prices, find the cheapest price you can on the Internet, add everything to your shopping cart so it shows shipping and taxes. Then print that out, and take it to a tire shop... most will beat the price. I saved almost $100 on my BFG gForce Sport tires at Discount Tire by getting them to beat Tirerack's price in this way.
