1987 Taurus transmission problems (stalling/jumpy)

Hi - I have a 87 Ford Taurus GL, 108K miles, automatic, 3.0L, and have some problems with the transmission, just trying to get some ideas on what it might be and how to fix it. Just yesterday it started stalling when going from reverse to drive. After it did that a few times I tried going from reverse to neutral and then to drive and that was OK. Still, I'd like to fix whatever is wrong with the tranny. Also, when shifting through park, neutral, drive, etc. the car jumps a little bit. It was like that when I got it about a year ago. Shifting through the different gears while in drive is fine. I'd like to try to do this myself - I like working on my car, and want to learn this stuff, but so far have only done more minor things like maintenance, a little brake work, replacing bad components, etc. So if there are guides etc. that you know of please let me know. Thanks, Dave
