1994 Buick Century Transmission Issue

I have a 1994 Buick Century with about 69K miles. I place the car in gear (any gear) and nothing happens. I wait (with the engine on) for a few seconds to a couple of mintues and then I put in gear again and it engages and I can go. Any clues?

Check trans fluid level and condition.

When was fluid and filter last changed?
