1996 Dodge Caravan transmission

Can anyone help with info here:

I have a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan with roughly 70k miles. Two months ago the transmission went and we took it to the local garage. They put a "rebuilt" transmission in (took about a week). The transmission would sometimes not shift from lower gear to freeway gear at about 50 mph the tac would go to 4000, 5000 and higher but no shifting. We would have to stop the car, pull over and then turn it back on and it usually would then shift until the next time it got a bug.

So we took it back--2 months 3 more transmissions, the last being a new one and $2,600 later we now have a new transmission with the same problems.

Obviously it's something besides the transmission. Has anyone experienced this and have suggestions?

Thanks, Scott

i think your use of the word "obviously" was a little hasty. chrysler had a history of bad trannies. replacements too. i just got rid of my 91 chrysler. the tranny was still intact but not always shifting into gear. i suggest you use google/news to research this. and particularly check the chrysler newsgroup. ...thehick

This doesn't quite wash. What do you mean by "the transmission went"? What was it doing or not doing? Better than even odds it did not need complete overhaul or replacement.

Sounds more like you have a garage that is not up to the task you've given them. It doesn't sound as if they're doing any diagnosis, just throwing parts at the problem. This is an electronically-controlled transmission. THe transmission control computer, the transmission and the engine control computer all talk to one another to make proper shifts. Fortunately, they also talk to a diagnostic computer in the hands of someone who knows how to use it to find out what the real problem is. Go to a local independent transmission specialist (NOT SCAAMCO!) and find out what the problem is before you spend another cent.
